For more than ten years, TANDEM has specialized in transporting works of art. In this period we have never judged the importance of a contract by its volume. Our contentment as well as that of our customers is founded on the conviction of taking seriously every arrangement. |
||||
| Every day we associate with people, whose life is shaped by art to the same degree as we are. | ||||
We have closely linked the development of our scope of services to the growing demands of our customers. In some cases ideas grew to tasks, the realization of which have also formed us. Looking back on this process provides us with a perspective for new projects. |

1979 Following an apprenticeship in the book trade and a two-year collaboration in the Cologne gallery Der Spiegel, Klaus Hillmann founds NADA, a business specializing on the transport of works of art. Experiences gained through the cooperation with artists, art dealers, and collectors lead to an efficient door-to-door delivery service. A first clientele was acquired in Cologne, Munich, and Berlin. |

Growing national and inter- national connections, an increasing turnover, preparing customs declarations and activities within the framework of major art exhibits ultimately necessitate a new corporate structure. 1987 The warehouse and office buildings of an old-established carrier in Frechen (near Cologne) are rented. The building, a plain flat-roofed construction dating back to the late 1940s, offers space and calmness necessary to meet new challenges. The business consolidates its contacts with international correspondents, regularly organizes airfreight transports, and provides room to store works of art for longer periods. By letting the managerial workload rest on additional shoulders, the now existing name TANDEM was coined. |

1988 Deutsche Bank commissions TANDEM as one of the carriers transporting works of art within the framework of its program "Art at work". Since that time TANDEM is a partner in the constant circulation of art between the head office in Frankfurt am Main and the German and international branches. Moreover, TANDEM undertakes to arrange the hanging of works of art in consultation with the bank's art department. |

| How we define service: Minding in details and keeping the whole in mind. | ||||
The volume of contracts for the appropriate installation of works of art steadily increases. Parallel to this development, TANDEM makes use of its considerable expertise to advise clients from the placement of objects up to the design of complete environments. 1995 Provinzial Insurance plans to bring together a collection of international contemporary art for the new building of its central administration in Düsseldorf. The art dealer Wolfgang Wittrock organizes a selection of works representing all areas of fine art. The 2,200 staff of the insurance's administration furthermore are given the chance of choosing individual graphics for their offices from a larger stock. In close cooperation with the coworkers, TANDEM then carries out the hanging of the works of art. As a final measure, the firm draws up a complete inventory of the works of art in the building. |

1995 Celebrity Cruises, an American shipowner incorporated in Miami and London, signs a contract with the Meyer Werft, a German shipyard in Papenburg, to build three cruise ships of the five-star class. They are scheduled to operate in the Caribbean and off the Alaska coast. In compliance with the Chandris shipowner family the luxurious vessels will be furnished with a comprehensive collection of contemporary art. |

In 1995 TANDEM receives the first commission to install more than 500 works of art on board the MV Century, conforming to standards for ocean-going ships. The collection for this vessel alone encompasses paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures and includes artists like Picasso, Johns, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, Hockney, and Christo. The collection focuses on American art of the post 1960s period. Early in 1996 construction of the MV Galaxy begins and in 1997 building activities on the MV Mercury commence. Besides the leading American trends of the last 30 years, these ships are to also include a larger spectrum of European art. In the phase preceding the acquisition, TANDEM negotiates contacts between artists, gallery owners, and the shipowner, is actively involved in a preliminary selection and carries out the final installation of the nearly 1000 works of art on both ships. 1997 Katharina Sieverding and Gerhard Merz are chosen to represent Germany on the XLVII Biennale di Venezia. TANDEM transports the works of Katharina Sieverding to Venice, organizes their unloading from the boats onto the exhibition grounds, and - in accordance with the artist's instructions - manages the installation in the rooms of the German pavilion. 1997 In cooperation with the Institut Français, the Comité Français du Parfum, an association of international perfume producers, presents the exhibit "Heavenly Scent - Explore the History of Perfume" in Germany. The Deutsche Museum in Munich, the Norddeutsche Landesmuseum Altonaer Museum, and the Orangerie Schloß Herrenhausen in Hanover are among the targeted locations. TANDEM draws up the plans for the installation at the individual sites in compliance with aesthetic and scientific criteria, guarantees the curatorship for the complete duration in Germany, and is responsible for all transports. 1998 The exhibit finds an extremely positive response. The Ostseesparkasse (OSPA) in Rostock voices its interest in hosting the show in the Hanseatic city within the framework of its cultural sponsoring program. TANDEM manages all contractual negotiations with the Comité Français du Parfum and suggests the final venue. In March 1998 "Heavenly Scent " opens in the monastery Zum Heiligen Kreuz, Rostock's historic-cultural museum. |
